We will also be introducing the big event which will be held in August next year in Madrid, Spain, namely WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011. Before Christmas is Advent

The air is cooler and its hard to believe Christmas is just a month away...time flies indeed! Well, as you may know, there is Christmas and there is Advent, the time to help us prepare better for the big feast which is Christmas. Advent comes from the latin root ad-venio which means "to come to". It starts usually around the Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew (Nov. 30) and runs for four Sundays afterwards, getting closer to Christmas day, the birthday of Jesus Christ.

To mark the four Sundays of Advent, Christian tradition has made use of an "advent wreath" as a reminder that Christmas is fast approaching. Not everyone knows how to make it, so we are going to have a hands-on class on:

Movie Review Resolutions

We had a great time watching "Fireproof" last October 10 and even had a more wonderful time discussing the film. We analyzed the message, the director's style, the background details that made the movie more meaningful and interesting.

One of the things we considered is that there are good films and there are waste-your-time films, meaning its not worth watching them. The problem is if you don't have a guide, you only find out they're trash after you've watched them. Well, we know how helpful it is to have a good movie review guide ready at hand when you need it, so we're passing it you. Hope it comes in handy! And as always, since this blog is meant for feedback, exchange of views, comments, etc., do share your movie review experiences with us!

Youthcom 2009 Macau Farewell party

Last August 23, we had the farewell party for the old folks of Ming Fai. We had snacks with them and showed them the short film above. We heard some laughs as they reacted in seeing themselves projected on the screen. We invited a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jeng to perform some Chinese songs and it was wonderful seeing some of the old folks humming along.

Afterwards, it was games time! We played toy guns, basketball and bowling with them. All were winners and were awarded small gifts that they could take with them.

The director of Ming Fai, Julia Lam, spent the afternoon with us and gave a thank you card to East Asian Educational Association, the organizer of our service project. She also gave each volunteer a souvenir from Ming Fai: a portable spoon and fork and chopsticks set in an elegant case with the Caritas logo. There were also a couple of staff who assisted us in making sure the party went smoothly. They were a big help indeed!

HALFWAY HOUSE

Its Thursday, Aug 20 and we are halfway through our volunteer service project in Ming Fai Caritas Center. It has been quite a challenge for all of the volunteers...making friends with the elderly, getting them to join the games, making all the beautiful decorations by hand...Yet, we all agree that it has been a most meaningful and enjoyable way to spend the summer.

Its not over yet, but we want to take the time to show you some photos of these past few days.
Here is Ada and Helen teaching two of the enthusiastic old folks how to make their own friendship bracelets. We all admired how fast their hands were in twisting the strings!

Our farewell party will be on Sunday and our planned theme is "Mini Olympics". Looking forward to it!

Leaders in the making

It was a well-spent Sunday afternoon ... In 2 hours, we learned so much about how to be good leaders thanks to the mentorship of Ms. Gloria Ma. The participants were from different backgrounds: high school, incoming college and university students, university graduate and professionals.

The first part of the seminar was getting-to-know one another. Each participant had the chance to share something about herself, interests, hobbies, etc. Afterwards, to break the ice, we played a game which was quite unique: we had to arrange ourselves by order of birth dates but without using words. We had to use non-verbal gestures to communicate with one another which month of the year we were born. All were quick to resort to using the hands to indicate which month she was born, except for one, who took a while to realize what everybody was doing! Well, with everyone warmed up, Gloria started with the lecture proper.

On the white board, she spelled out the words "L-E-A-D-E-R-S-H-I-P". As she gave her lecture, she mentioned what each of the letters stood for.

L stands for "LOVE"
E stands for "ENCOURAGEMENT"
A stands for "ACTION"
D stands for "DRIVE"
E stands for "EXAMPLE"
R stands for "RELATIONSHIP"
S stands for "SUPPORTIVE"
H stands for "HUMILITY"

Great night, great friends, beautiful Philippines!

At around 5 PM, the doorbell started to ring continuously for about 3 times. "Hi!" "Are you here for the International Night?"" Yes." And the newly-arrived would be ushered into the kitchen for the first part of the Philippine International Night: the cooking demonstration.

Ate Endy was Cook/Presenter for the evening. The menu for the activity were the all-time favorites: Pancit Canton (which was especially requested by Cris after she tasted it last year in the Tacloban Service Project), Chicken and Pork Adobo, Green Mango Salad with Sauteed Shrimp Paste (or bagoong), Fish Crackers with Vinegar and Garlic Dip and of course...Halo-Halo for dessert! Cris, Maggie, Amy, another Maggie and Wendy took turns slicing the carrots and the cabbage while Angie deveined the shrimps. Jenny lined the baskets with banana leaves and Susy helped out with the halo-halo ingredients...all 7 of them! Just below, we see Cris peeling the green mangoes and Wendy anxiously waiting for her turn.

We took time preparing the dishes,there was little time left for the cultural get-together. Dayenne prepared a presentation about the Philippines. We also watched a promotional music video hightlighting the different scenic spots of the Philippines with famous Philippine artists singing in the background. Peggy brought this video with her after her vacation in Manila. We had such a great time...see you all again in our next International Night!

Summer is coming soon....We all want to relax from school, have some fun, perhaps earn some extra income and learn new skills. After all, summer vacation would truly be a waste of time if we don't make the most of it, right?

Well, we are offering you a chance to spend part of your summer in the most educational, meaningful and fun-filled way: be a volunteer! This year, Wahn Tihng Study Center is organizing YouthCom 2009. YouthCom stands for Youth for the Community, an annual volunteer service project aimed at forming young women leaders by means of service work to needy communities. This year, we will be working with a Philippines-based foundation called Project: Brave Kids (www.projectbravekids.org), a group helping poor families with cancer-stricken children. We will be helping out in the following way:

- teach kids English and Maths, Arts and Crafts and Music
- teaching mothers livelihood projects that will help add to their income
- teach short courses on personal development for children and parents
- build a "learn and play corner" containing books and eductional toys in the
hospital

ANGOLA International Night

Angola, a country rich in natural resources right in the southwestern coast of the African continent.

It was a delight learning dishes from Angola like Pipis, Moamba, Canja, tapioca dessert and much more. Our guest speaker and cook, Mercedes, taught us how to make these dishes. For some of us, it was our first time to see ingredients like tapioca flour and canned sauces from palm fruit. The cooking experience was one of a kind! Dessert! Mixing tapioca flour

During the get-together, Mercedes told us how it was like growing up in Angola and having to leave it when unrest and civil war broke out. Although she is Portuguese, leaving Angola to go back to Portugal was like leaving one's home and entering a totally new world. In telling us about the people of Angola, among other things, she explained that for them, movements of the body are part of expressing oneself. Even children who are learning to walk already begin dancing!

Thanks Mercedes for sharing your time, your memories and your wonderful cooking! And thanks to you we know more about Angola and its people.

Meaningful discussions on LOVE

It was wonderful to see many smiling faces leaving the get-together we had last February 21 (Saturday). We had talked about an issue very close to everyone's heart: love. And it was nice to have come out from that talk reassured about the importance of holding on to the good principles that we have learned, learning from the mistakes of the others and coming out stronger and more resolved to be mature women with our heads over our hearts.

Our speaker, Gloria Ma, started the talk by asking the participants how they spent the past Valentine's Day. The participants shared their experiences, not only on how they spent Valentine's Day, but also how they manage dating with school work. One girl commented how she and her boyfriend try to encourage one another to study harder, often competing with one another who will get the better grades. After this warming up moment, the talk on Love and Relationships commenced. The following is a summary of the contents of the talk:

True love and chastity 真愛與貞潔

Real love between a man and a woman should be expressed through endless genuine care, mutual respect and concern for the other's well being over and above one's own selfishness. Often, we think that love is the quantity or quality of material or sense satisfaction that the other person is able to give us. The person loves me more if he gives me more things or makes me always feel good. Unknowingly, we are thinking more of ourselves ("what can I get from the other person?") more than thinking of the other person ("what can I give to the other person?").

There are many manifestations of love, according to the type of relationship (family, friends, etc.), the proximity or closeness (acquaintance, close friends, boyfriends, husband). With all those we truly love, the requirement that real love demands of giving oneself selflessly always holds. Yet, the way we show our love matters a lot. There is the suitable way for every occasion and circumstance. In the relationship between girlfriend and boyfriend, there should be mutual respect. Saving the gift of sex until marriage brings freedom, joy and true romance without regret. Quoting a illustration from a renowned author on chastity, the speaker told us how illogical it would be to use one's wedding gown (all white and clean) to mop up spilled coffee. This is how it is when we don't preserve our chastity for marriage. True love teaches us to wait and true love is made strong by patience, sacrifice and self control.

Nigerian International Night

Last November 29 we had the pleasure to have Lauretta Ojo with us as our speaker for the Nigerian International Night. It was truly worth the wait! Always ready to feed an army, Lauretta arrived to the centre with a loadful of goodies she insisted to cook herself. For the cooking demonstration, she presented three dishes: the first one is a soup called "Pe Pe Soup" (pe stands for bell peppers or capsicum, one of the main ingredients). The second dish was thick savoury sauce made of blended peppers, tomato and onion and green vegetables and the third dish was our equivalent of the rice: a porridge-like paste made of rice flour. And yes, she prepared a citrus drink made of pineapple, orange, pomelo, mandarins and...ginger!.

Its truly amazing to discover the richness and variety of Nigerian cooking! I think all of us were surprised how the dishes came out.

Another novelty for the evening was how to eat: we ate with our hands! Lauretta demonstrated how they would eat using the three fingers of the hands. How elegantly she did it, even more refined than the way I would eat using the knife and fork!

There was so much to learn that the time was not enough. She also brought with her traditional cloths and woven fabric to show to us. She introduced to us an instrument similar to the maraccas made from hollowed-out gourd. We could only admire the creativity and resourcefulness of the Nigerian people who made something useful out of ordinary items they had around.

We look forward to having her again!

In 2001 a friend of mine invited me to a retreat in Wickenden Manor, I went, and I thought “Oh my God, I’ve wasted my life!” Not everybody has that reaction at a retreat, but I did. After that I attended days of recollection regularly, at Ashwell House University students hall of residence in London and I took all my friends because it was so good. At the time, I was a member of a band, I sang in the band and I had a very active social life, everything anyone could want, but there was unrest in my soul. It’s difficult to express, but head and heart told me God wanted more of me, and I had to give more. Friends said how do you do it? You party so much yet you don’t neglect your religion, you have good judgement, you’re always so cheerful… Opus Dei helped me to get the balance right. I got myself a spiritual director – a lay person in Opus Dei – who helped me get it all together.You party so much yet you don't neglect your religion" (Ekene Ogbechie is a pharmacist by profession, and a former singer in a band.)

“I rediscovered that I could have a personal relationship with God”
I was born into a Catholic family and though I got to know about Opus Dei when I was young, it never really interested me. I was already working when, thanks to one of my brothers, I attended a retreat. I began to attend Christian doctrine classes and rediscovered that I could have a personal relationship with God. Particularly strong at the time was the thought that God had given me so much and I just had to respond. (James Burfitt comes from Sydney, Australia).

Sept and October activities

Its been some time now since we've had the last International Night. Two months ago we had Philippines' International Night where we learned to make simple dishes like Adobo, Green Mango Salad, Pancit Palabok and Leche Flan. The dining room was decked with multi-colored flaglets that added to the festive mood. It was quite a cozy gathering though with only about 10 of us. Nonetheless, it was fun like always with so much time to exchange stories among all of us in a relaxed setting...

INCONTRO ROMANO Presentation of Research Paper Results

Last Saturday, September 13, Marina (Year 2 Tourism Major MUST) and Anita (Year 2 Tourism Major IFT), presented the results and findings of their paper "Meal Time=Family Time?" A Survey on Family Meals of Macau Chinese Families. In their presentation, they emphasized the important role of family meals (that is, having lunch or dinner with the family on a regular basis) and how it contributes to stronger family ties by gathering the family together to talk about the events of their day. They also brought up the common practice among the families, who took part in the survey, of having the television on during the family meal. This practice has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, television facilitates that family members have something in common to talk about (i.e. comments on what they are watching). On the other hand, it may actually get in the way of having a dialogue among family members.

Marina noted that through her experience of preparing this paper for Incontro Romano, she learned many new things. She developed her survey and communication skills. Also it made her see that it is worthwhile having a more in-depth study on the effects of frequent TV-watching in family life.

Anita was happy to have had the chance to listen to different opinions of people regarding the topic. If she has another chance to work with Incontro Romano, she'll take it again.

To prepare for their presentation, they wanted to experiment in their homes how it was not to have the television on during dinner. Marina commented on how 'out of the blue', her dad asked her "Why didn't you turn the TV on?" And she replied that its because she's doing an experiment.

At the end of the presentation, Jenny presented the two of them of their Certificates which came all the way from Rome! The certificate cited "Special Mention" for the paper they submitted.

We would like to inform you that the centre's study room is open everyday from Monday to Sunday should you need a quiet and peaceful place to study. Likewise, if you need tutoring for any subject, particularly in English and Maths, you can arrange it with any of our staff.

We will be starting the school year with a special activity, the presentation of papers submitted to last year's international congress INCONTRO ROMANO. It will be held on Saturday, September 13 at 5:00 PM. The paper is entitled "Meal Time=Family Time? A Survey on Family Meals of Macau Chinese Families. Hope you can join us!

AFTER SYDNEY...Thoughts about World Youth Day 2008

Some weeks have passed after those unforgettable days in Sydney. As everyone is trying to settle back to "the normal life", we cannot but help sharing some of the thoughts of those who went, in the hope that by reliving them, the memory of those wonderful days will always be alive in their hearts.

I am still in WYD mood now, it’s the most amazing and wonderful trip I have ever experienced, a journey that’s full of love and faith in Jesus. When we arrived at Sydney’s airport, I saw several youth groups from different countries, who spoke different languages, but coming together in Sydney for the same aim – to receive the Holy Spirit and to be the witnesses to the end of the earth.
In the next 3 days, we had catechesis every day. It’s a good lesson for me to enhance my religion. We visited St. Mary’s Cathedral and prayed in front of Our Lady of the Southern Cross. The Power of God! The youth at World Youth Day is only a small fraction of all the Catholics in the world and it is already unbelievable! Sometimes I feel I was walking this journey alone but I was wrong seeing what I saw. The energy, the strength from God which allows the impossible!!

It was such a great experience!
Although the trip took us so much time to get prepared, we learnt so many things during the process.
To pay for the expenses of the trip, which was not cheap, we tried our best to get money by selling cookies, lucky draw etc. Everyone, even though they were not Catholics or Christians, helped us generously! I was touched.
Although the weather in Sydney was quite horrible for me (I came back with so many pimples on my face), it’s still worth it since I SAW THE POPE.
WYD… it is a big Catholic event which I think you should at least attend once in your life time. You can meet so many Catholics from all over the world. You may need to leave your work for a while, but you can spend all your time with God during the period of WYD and develop a real close friendship between Him and yourself.
Therefore, I am really looking forward to the next WYD in Spain in 2011. Yeah!

The WYD trip was wonderful, and I enjoyed it so much! The most unforgettable experience was being able to see the Holy Father so near, who was just a metre away, passing by and waving right in front of me! I've met a lot of people, from all parts of the world, from places I haven't even heard of, and it was really interesting to experience the characteristics of different cultures. The catechesis was very good, the bishops presented the doctrines (mostly on the Holy Spirit) in a very humorous and lively manner, which totally contrasted with what some people thought of Catholic faith as "old-fashioned and boring". One thing that struck me was that there were many young priests in other countries, so there's really a need to pray for young local priests in Macao. Seeing so many people from afar, all came together for the same purpose--worship the Lord, have given me a lot of encouragement and support, that I'm not alone in my fight, that there are many people fighting just the same to be children of God. It was a journey that required much physical strength, but it was worthwhile, coz it could really strengthen and deepen my faith.

World Youth day Sydney allowed me to see that the love for God from the youth can actually be ‘stretched’. It was shown by our desire to correspond to God with a high physical demand of worship within the one week pilgrimage. After coming back to our daily life, our love for God has become bigger through building up a continuous dialogue with Him.

So what are you waiting for? Let's get ready for WYD Madrid 2011...Animo!

We learned how to make Caldo Verde, Porco com Ameijoas a Alentejana and Arroz Doce...Watched a slideshow of Lisboa, Braga, Oporto...And enjoyed the company of such a friendly host, Susana. It was a wonderful evening meeting new friends who joined us for the first time, and some who surprisingly, had been around when they were much younger!
